The Materials and Manufacturing Office (MMO) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is looking for a Mechanical Testing and Design Engineer to join our Drivetrain Technology Center to support mechanical drivetrain component testing and to integrate equipment into the existing laboratories in the Center, as well as the Materials Processing Division in general. Responsibilities include the design of universal robotic attachments for new and existing processes and the design of components and development of drawings for the fabrication of test equipment for the cold spray systems. Opportunities for project management will be provided as well. This job will be filled as a level 2, level 3, or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Bachelor’s degree (Master's degree preferred for higher level positions) in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Science and Mechanics, or Materials Science and Engineering is desired. Other preferred experience areas include: Mechanical testing; metallurgical/materials characterization; materials analysis using finite element methods; test data monitoring and acquisition, including thermal, vibration, and related sensor equipment; electrical equipment and control wiring; gear manufacturing; gear metrology; gear design; drivetrain technologies; CNC programming; corrosion testing, non-destructive testing and machining. The following are requirement areas: Hands on experience in the operation and maintenance of different mechanical test processes; the ability to develop and execute test plans for tensile, fatigue, wear, and corrosion testing; data acquisition and analysis, metallurgical, failure, and statistical analysis; robotics; machining; mechanical design; and materials characterization. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen. This is a one-year, fixed-term renewable appointment.
