Description

Perform current laboratory experiments, research and development of new laboratory experiments for new courses being added to curriculum. Demonstrate to students proper usage of laboratory equipment. Demonstrate to students proper laboratory techniques such as proper method of bending of glass tubing pipets. Prepare and maintain ion exchange columns. Compile and analyze laboratory expenditures. Assist stockroom supervisor in manifesting and preparing waste chemicals for disposal. Prepare, mix, and standardize various solutions and chemicals for the undergraduate laboratory. Operate analytical balances and volumetric equipment, pH meters, spec 20’s, and multimeters. Assist faculty members by supplying stockroom materials as needed for new or proposed student laboratory experiments. Responsible for the placing, replacing, and removing of various materials and solutions in the laboratory as needed. Dispense chemicals, acids, alcohol, and liquid nitrogen. Record quantities and date dispensed. Charge supplies issued by computer system, obtaining signatures on required cards or slips. Assemble supplies for the laboratory, stock desks, maintain record of supplies and materials used and assign students to laboratory desks. Provide and set-up special equipment needed in laboratories as directed by supervisor. Perform necessary duties to maintain stockroom, laboratories, storage facilities and other work areas in a neat and orderly condition. Perform minor or routine maintenance duties in the laboratories, including minor plumbing such as checking and repairing loose water and steam handles, checking safety showers and drain traps, packing nuts and clearing clogged drains, painting various facilities (benches, shelves, etc.) oiling laboratory desk tops and other maintenance duties as directed. Construct special laboratory equipment and facilities. Pick-up materials and parts as needed for various projects. Perform necessary duties and unload various supplies and materials at receiving areas and reserve storage area as needed. Move equipment, furnishings and supplies. Anticipate need for supplies and materials and order from reserve stock as necessary. Job Requirements: Requires the use of shop mathematics together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, various types of adjustable measuring instruments and the training generally applicable in a particular or specialized occupation. Equivalent to 1 to 3 years applied trades training. Requires some training in chemistry and a working knowledge of chemicals, chemical reactions, and toxicity. Over 1 and up to 3 years of effective experience or on-the-job training. Shift: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 2:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. Wednesday and Friday 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Days Off: Saturday, Sunday
