Penn State’s College of Engineering and the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) are seeking exceptionally qualified applicants to act as a Defense Research Liaison between one of the nation’s leading colleges of engineering and one of the nation’s most valued University Affiliated Research Centers (UARC). The Liaison is expected to gain a deep understanding of the research capabilities of each organization, identify gaps, assess strategic alignments, and develop funding opportunities that leverage the strengths of the two organizations. The Liaison is expected to identify future paths for early-stage research being conducted by the College’s faculty as well as assist ARL researchers in connecting with collaborators in the College. The Liaison will also serve as a champion for each unit within Penn State. The Liaison will also look for and help create new opportunities for College of Engineering students to engage with ARL, including but not limited to graduate research, undergraduate research, and undergraduate capstone design projects. The Liaison will also be knowledgeable about issues related to dissemination of classified information, and assist ARL researchers in working with College faculty and students not holding clearance. The successful candidate will have significant experience (at least 10 years) in proposing, conducting and managing defense-related research, an understanding of the mission and operational constraints of a UARC and an open academic organization, and a demonstrated record of establishing productive research collaborations across organizations. Applicants must be a US citizen and eligible to hold a Top Secret security clearance. Preference will be given to candidates already holding a Top Secret clearance. This is a multi-year, non-tenure-line academic position with excellent possibility for future appointments based upon performance and available funding. The appointment is expected to be at the level of Professor of Practice.
