The Steady Thermal Aero Research Turbine (START) Lab seeks to hire a qualified Engineering Designer to assist in the daily operations of a complex research facility. The focus areas for START are on increasing turbine efficiencies through improved turbine airfoil cooling, improved seals between rotating and stationary parts, and through the use and testing of additive manufactured components. Through strong support from Penn State, a major gas turbine manufacturer, and the federal government, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University created a unique facility that houses two 1,500 hp compressors and numerous other complex systems required for turbine testing. Information on the START Lab can be found at: Duties for this position include creating solid models, detail drawings, assembly drawings, bills of materials, and other documentation using accepted methods and techniques; complete Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) on designs; perform periodic inspections of parts during the manufacturing process; collaborate with research associates and sponsors to conceptualize and optimize designs; lead design review meetings; provide recommendations on material selection, geometric tolerance and dimensioning, ease of manufacturing and assembly, and cost-effective designs. The designs will include a mix of mechanical design drawings and electrical/wiring diagrams. This position requires the ability to work and effectively communicate in a diverse environment with students, faculty, and staff. The position also requires direct communication with the outside research sponsors. This position requires that the person be a self-starter and have the ability to work efficiently and independently. This job will be filled as a level 2, or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Associate's degree or higher in a Drafting or related discipline or higher plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Bachelor or Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing & Design Engineering, or related field along with additional years of related work experience is preferred. Advanced knowledge of ANSYS, Solid Works, or similar software package is required. It is preferred that the designer has a basic understanding of gas turbine engines. You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with good possibility of re-funding.
