WPSU Penn State not only houses the region’s National Public Radio (NPR) and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) stations, but also develops national documentary film and education initiatives to raise awareness of important social issues, and works with a multitude of on-campus clients to deliver web, video and interactive solutions that promote Penn State and its mission. Our busy and growing multimedia team seeks a web development talent who enjoys learning new techniques, has a strong understanding of user experience, and loves the web. This job bridges design and development, but your focus will primarily be HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and content management system (CMS) installation, configuration, and customization. Core CMS development platforms include Craft, ExpressionEngine, and WordPress which all utilize PHP/MySQL. Core scripting tasks utilize MVC frameworks (Angular.js/React) and JavaScript (jQuery, vanilla javascript). You will create templates and prototypes at the beginning of development while working with content experts, designers, and developers to complete the implementation and launch. You’ll enjoy a team-oriented, casual atmosphere conducive to maximizing your potential but must be comfortable discussing and contributing ideas at any stage of the process. This job will be filled as a level 2, or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate’s competencies, education, and experience. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Typically requires an Associate's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Competencies critical to success are the demonstrated ability to implement one-off projects quickly while keeping long-term projects on schedule; rapid development/prototyping of front-end XHTML/CSS/JS; exposure or experience with widely used CMS; proficiency solving cross-browser issues; and a thorough understanding of responsive web design technique. We seek candidates who are able to demonstrate experience and ability to advance Outreach’s diversity initiative. Familiarity with other front-end frameworks (Bootstrap) and CSS preprocessors required. It would be a bonus if you have skills in Adobe Creative Suite, Drupal experience, knowledge of web accessibility, and understanding of web optimization techniques. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
