Description

The Pennsylvania State University Libraries invites applications for the position Open Source Geospatial Analyst within the Digital Scholarship and Data Services department. The Open Source Geospatial Analyst will work as a member of the Donald W. Hamer Center for Maps and Geospatial Information team to support open source software, open data, and web-mapping solutions to spatial problems in research, teaching and learning at Penn State University. S/he will provide expert guidance through one-on-one and small group consultation services, develop and deliver guest lectures and workshops, and will be active in the community of geospatial scholars and professionals at the university. The Analyst will advocate for open geospatial solutions to spatial problems and promote successes at the university. S/he will develop and complete independent and/or collaborative demonstration projects of broad interest and/or high impact to raise the profile of open source geospatial softwares, the use of open data and web-mapping applications, and/or the value of library print and digital geospatial information resources. Due to the rapid pace of technological development in open geospatial fields, professional development is an important part of this position and the ideal candidate will demonstrate an enthusiasm and aptitude for learning to use new open geospatial data sources, tools, and methods. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to diversity, equity, respect and inclusion and the ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented work environment. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to candidates who have Master’s-level training and/or experience using open source geospatial tools and open data, as well as familiarity with the Open Source Geospatial Foundation, Open Geospatial Consortium and related initiatives. Additional required skills include: proficient skills using at least one open source geospatial software tool (e.g. QGIS, Mapbox etc.); familiarity with open geospatial data sources and formats (e.g. OpenStreetMap, etc.); working knowledge of at least one computer scripting language commonly used in open source and web-mapping tools in desktop and cloud-computing environments; foundational understanding of geospatial data and geographic information systems consistent with at least an undergraduate-level of training and/or experience; ability to work both independently and in small results oriented teams; and the demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the benefits of diversity and inclusion throughout an organization. The University Libraries values diversity of thought, perspective, experience and people, and is actively committed to a culture of inclusion and respect.
