The Sustainability Institute seeks to hire a Sustainable Operations Analyst to assist the University in being a leader in operational sustainability among higher education institutions. The position will report to the Director of the Sustainability Institute and primarily help to support and facilitate the university’s Sustainable Operations Council (SOC) in an effort to fulfill their vision of zero-waste and carbon neutral Penn State campuses that anchor and bolster local economies, and act as living laboratories for Penn State students, faculty, and staff. The SOC serves as a clearinghouse that was established for the purpose of bringing together various operational units to address the University’s environmental footprint through a systemic, holistic and collaborative effort. The SOC is charged with baselining current performance, benchmarking, establishing goals, recommending policies, practices and procedures and aligning stakeholders to improve environmental performance while keeping affordability of undergraduate education in mind. The SOC accomplishes its work through the establishment of task forces that address various aspects of the University’s footprint. The ideal candidate for this position will have strong analytical skills, and sound project management and logistical capabilities to support the work of the council. The SOC Analyst will be tasked with creating business case recommendations for change through data collection and analysis that can be used to inform policy and procedures. The incumbent will work closely with the Associate Director for Operations and Partnerships at the Sustainability Institute to create reporting structures and identify key performance indicators to measure the impact of SOC activities. The SOC Analyst will coordinate council and task force meetings, create agendas, facilitate meetings, document meeting outcomes, and insure that action items are completed. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with multiple operations-related individuals as well as faculty and staff is essential. Sound interpersonal skills are required to navigate diverse cultures and sub-cultures. Penn State is a 24 campus University and the work of this position will include all campuses. A sound foundational knowledge on current global sustainability trends and practices, as well as knowledge of the practice of sustainability and its core tenets is essential. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred qualifications for this position: Prior knowledge of higher education sustainability work including the Association for Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education STARS reporting framework; strong written and verbal communication as well as meeting facilitation and planning; sound technology skills that utilize Microsoft Office software and additional project management and database tools; and a demonstrated commitment to and understanding of inclusionary practices to support diversity. A master’s degree in business, sustainability or related discipline with analytical work experience. Project Management or Organizational Change Management expertise desirable. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
