The Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Office (FDAO) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is looking for a flow acoustics engineer to join our Flow Acoustics Department to perform modeling and measurement research in the area of flow induced structural acoustics for a wide range of possible applications, including marine vehicles, aviation, and renewable and non-renewable energy production. Other duties include preparing for and conducting experiments at ARL and various off-site government testing facilities using advanced instrumentation, identifying and performing appropriate numerical and analytical modeling, writing and submitting proposals for funded research, cultivating relationships with existing and potential government and industry sponsors, collaborating with other research and academic faculty at Penn State, and documenting research activities in technical reports and peer reviewed publications. Faculty rank will be commensurate with education level and experience. Minimum requirements include a Master`s degree (PhD preferred) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Acoustics plus two years of related experience. Other preferred experience areas include: Familiarity with data acquisition systems and data acquisition system development; proficiency in programming within the Matlab environment and in a compiled language such as C/C++ or FORTRAN; familiarity with government research programs and the proposal submission process; expertise in vibration measurements and modal analysis techniques, finite element, and boundary element analysis; and expertise in flow excitation mechanisms such as gust response and turbulent boundary layer excitation. Effective written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, and meet project schedule requirements is required. Domestic and international travel will occasionally be required to support testing. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply.
