Description

The History program at the Abington College of the Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin fall 2019. We welcome applications from historians with a specialization in the Global South, any period. Candidates with a focus on the Islamic World or Latin American/Caribbean History are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates must have completed the Ph.D. in History, or expect to do so by the time of appointment. The successful candidate will teach a variety of undergraduate courses in his or her areas of expertise, including introductory survey courses; maintain an active program of scholarly research and publication; advise students; and contribute service to the department, college, university, and profession. Candidates from underrepresented groups within the academy are particularly encouraged to apply. Located roughly 15 miles north of vibrant and diverse Philadelphia, Abington College is a minority-majority institution serving a racially and ethnically diverse student body of nearly 4,000 undergraduates, including a significant proportion of first-generation, nontraditional, and international students. As an institution, we have a mission to create high-impact educational experiences that lead to profound personal transformation and broader social change. This is a place where your teaching and campus service can have a strong impact, and where you will find a collegial atmosphere of scholar-teachers who are genuinely excited to make a difference in the lives of our students. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to developing and maintaining an innovative, engaging, and student-centered curriculum that is responsive to the needs of diverse students in a major metropolitan area. Abington College offers 19 baccalaureate degrees on our campus, and the first two years of more than 160 Penn State majors that can be completed at other campuses. The campus has the atmosphere and advantages of a small college teaching environment, while also offering the resources of a major research university, including travel funding and other research supports. The successful candidate is expected to maintain an active scholarly agenda and demonstrate a clear promise of significant research and publication productivity. Review of applications will begin November 1, 2018 and continue until the position is filled. To apply, submit 1) a cover letter outlining teaching and research interests, 2) a curriculum vitae, 3) a statement of teaching philosophy and/or sample syllabus, and 4) three letters of reference. Application material must be submitted on-line through psu.jobs. Preliminary interviews will be held via Skype. Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies. Penn State is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, and is committed to providing employment opportunities to all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability or protected veteran status.
