Description

A Research Technologist 3 position is available in the Pontes lab, in the Departments of Pathology, and Microbiology and Immunology at Penn State College of Medicine. The successful candidate will conduct research aimed at understanding physiological responses elicited by bacteria during defined stress conditions, and during interactions with eukaryotic host cells. This position requires working both individually and as a team leader, under the supervision of the principal investigator. The technician is expected to actively participate in the research by identifying critical gaps in scientific understanding, formulating hypotheses, and designing and implementing experiments aimed at addressing these hypotheses. The technician is expected to carry out his/her own research projects, assist with other projects, and manage group projects. This position requires proficiency in standard molecular biology techniques (i.e. (q)PCR, nucleic acid purification, cloning and Western blotting) and the ability to learn and implement new techniques in the laboratory. Additionally, the technician is expected to maintain the daily operations of the laboratory, by replenishing consumables, preparing media and reagents, maintaining sanitation, and training and supervising new personnel. The technician is expected to maintain laboratory notebooks with accurate and complete records of laboratory work, to enable reproducibility. This position requires excellent interpersonal, written verbal and communication skills Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher (Master's degree preferred) or higher plus seven years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with possibility of re-funding.
