The Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics (ESM) at The Pennsylvania State University seeks applicants for a tenure-track/tenured faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of advanced scanning/transmission electron microscopy (S/TEM). Other academic ranks will also be considered in exceptional cases. Successful candidates will have demonstrated expertise in advanced S/TEM. In particular, we seek outstanding candidates interested in advanced use of existing TEM equipment at Penn State (Titan3 G2 and Talos F200X in the Materials Research Institute) and customizing it for in-situ and/or environmental operando, to explore an active research endeavor to discover new physics and/or materials science and/or physical/chemical processes. We are especially interested in applicants whose research focuses on, but not limited to, in-situ/operando TEM characterization of materials for quantum optics/computing, 2D materials, chemical catalysis, electrochemical charging, crystalline growth, phase transition, and mechanical failure. Successful candidates will benefit from the highly interdisciplinary environment at Penn State and establish cross-disciplinary collaborations on campus in engineering and materials sciences, chemistry, physics, electrical engineering and mechanics. Candidates are welcome to expand their re-search areas into cryo-TEM (FEI Titan Krios) and contribute to the convergence of the Materials and Life Sciences. The successful applicant will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses and offer new courses in ESM.
