The Department of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies (CAMS) at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for the appointment of a tenure-track Assistant Professor or a tenured Associate Professor in the field of Roman history, beginning August 15, 2019. We seek applications from candidates with active research interests in the history of the ancient Roman world. Complementary areas of specialization or research experience are welcome, such as Roman archaeology and material culture, or Latin epigraphy. Primary teaching responsibilities include instruction in Roman history, civilization, and literature at all undergraduate levels. The successful candidate is expected to teach broad survey courses that contribute to the General Education curriculum offered by the department (e.g., Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations) and should be able to teach Latin language and literature courses at all levels. The department embraces the entire Mediterranean and Near Eastern world in antiquity and welcomes candidates who can contribute to the dialogue across the fields of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies. It is desirable that this position will contribute to the department’s study abroad programs. For candidates at the assistant professor level, requirements include Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment, at least three years of college-level teaching experience, and evidence of scholarly publication and productivity. Candidates at the level of associate professor should demonstrate excellence in their achievements both in college-level teaching and in scholarly research in order to satisfy the departmental criteria for tenure.
