Position Summary: Research Technologist 2 position available in the Pontes lab at the Department of Pathology at Penn State College of Medicine. The successful candidate will conduct experiments aimed at understanding basic molecular mechanisms by which bacterial cells maintain cellular homeostasis when faced with physiological disturbances that are either artificially imposed under defined growth conditions or encountered during natural interactions with eukaryotic host cells. The successful candidate will apply basic and advance laboratory techniques for microbiology and cell physiology studies. He or she is expected to learn how to design experiments, analyze results and troubleshoot. The successful candidate is also expected to maintain laboratory notebooks with accurate and complete records of laboratory work. Primary Duties: Managing day to day operations of laboratory, including overseeing maintenance of equipment and handling of overall logistics support for laboratory staff (carrying our laboratory order, replenishing consumables, preparing media and reagents, and maintaining sanitation). Enforcing policies of chemical and biological safety and waste management and, in conjunction with institutional representatives, schedule waste removal and laboratory inspections. Assisting with training and oversight of new laboratory members, including graduate students and postdocs. Managing, archiving and distribution of bacterial strains. Designing and conducting genetic and molecular biology experiments, biochemical assays, phenotypic and genotypic characterization of bacteria. Preservation of experimental data, including computer archiving of raw data and maintaining laboratory personal notebooks with accurate and complete records of laboratory work. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with possibility of re-funding.
