Description

The Department of Public Health Sciences is looking for a full-time qualified candidate to conduct laboratory activities, aid in the processing and management of biological specimens collected in various cancer epidemiologic studies (i.e., prostate cancer and infectious agents and cancers), and perform in administrative duties to meet research needs. The responsibilities include the following: to ensure all specimens (blood, urine, and saliva) are properly labeled, processed, filed in a sample management system, and stored within lab freezers; to perform laboratory testing on samples from ongoing studies such as processing of blood specimens; to prepare reagents and solutions; to conduct DNA, RNA, and protein isolation; to perform qPCR and digital PCR; to perform exosome isolation and characterizing them using appropriate techniques; to maintain and organize activities in the laboratory (e.g., ordering supplies, coordinate shipment of specimens, maintain lab equipment); to participate in training activities of students/interns in the laboratory; to write standardized protocols for various lab procedures; to analyze the qPCR data generated from the gene expression analysis experiment; and, to learning new lab techniques to accomplish research goals. In addition, this position requires participating in organizational and administrative activities of research projects when needed: subject recruitment, administration of consents and questionnaire, data entry, literature review, and writing lab sections for papers and grants. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Practical experience in a research setting in a clinical and/or molecular biology laboratory is preferred. A candidate who has experience in working independently in a laboratory environment and can troubleshoot experiments is a plus. Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software such as Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are recommended. This is a fixed term appointment funded for 8 months from the date of hire.
