Research Technologist in Evolutionary Genomics
The Renner Lab at The Pennsylvania State University is hiring a Research Technologist to assist in our research efforts to study comparative and evolutionary genomics. Responsibilities will include overseeing daily operations of the laboratory including purchasing reagents and lab supplies, managing the laboratory budget; creating and maintaining an electronic inventory of reagents and samples and other managerial responsibilities; establishing and optimizing research methods; analyzing, summarizing and reporting the data/results of experiments; and assisting in writing research summaries. The Research Technologist is expected to perform a variety of specialized tasks associated with conducting research experiments in the basic science laboratory, including work with arthropod and plant tissues. Molecular biology skills are necessary for this position, and experience with nucleic acid extraction (RNA and DNA), next-generation sequencing experiments (library prep, design, implementation and analyses), and phylogenetics is highly desirable. Additional responsibilities will include maintaining insects in the laboratory during field season, as well as plant tissue culture lines on a continual basis. The candidate will assist in training undergraduate and graduate students, and may participate in outreach activities. This job will be filled as a level 1, or level 2, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 1. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Strong communication skills and knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel are also necessary for this position.
