Description

The College of Agricultural Sciences is seeking an individual trained in community and economic development, agriculture, agricultural economics, business development, entrepreneurship and/or related field to join our nationally recognized Penn State Extension Energy, Business and Community Vitality Unit. The individual will be responsible for actively working to identify important educational and research opportunities to positively impact community, business, and agricultural development through a focus on profitability, agricultural sector job creation, value added production, and financial management. The successful candidate will demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in one or more of the following areas: planning and visioning; marketing and product development; financial planning and management; leadership, engagement, and facilitation; and/or workforce development. Further, the successful candidate will be willing to develop working level knowledge across all of the above fields and be able to identify and work within overlaps among topics. Given the development of shale gas across the region this position covers, the individual will also need to understand shale development and its effects on agriculture, landowners and communities. As a result of these educational programs, farms, businesses and communities will benefit from having stronger, and expanding local economies built on sound science. Success in this educational program will allow agricultural businesses and individuals to focus on issues of business development, sustainability, competitiveness, and local job creation. Competitive candidates will also demonstrate a general understanding of extension education. As part of the Business and Community Vitality Team, the incumbent will work with other team members to identify learning objectives, develop educational events and materials, and utilize evaluations to measure the program’s success and impact. Members are responsible for development of a diverse external funding portfolio (e.g. grants, contracts, cost recovery, development) in support of their and the team’s educational programs. The candidate must identify and engage with diverse populations, meeting audience needs through innovative educational content and methods including online courses, videos, mobile apps, and electronic publications, in addition to traditional publications and in-person presentations. The individual will work closely with university faculty in developing and conducting applied research relevant to those needs. Additionally, they will develop and/or participate in interdisciplinary collaborations across teams, colleges and institutions. The position will be located in Wyoming County at 71 Hollow Crest Rd #2, Tunkhannock, PA, with special programmatic emphasis on Susquehanna, Bradford, Sullivan, Wyoming, Lycoming, and Tioga, and will be part of one or more teams delivering programs statewide. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to candidates with degree(s) in community and economic development, agricultural economics, business development, planning, and/or related disciplines. Desired experience includes curriculum development, grant writing and management, and leadership development. Candidates should have a basic knowledge of and commitment to community and economic development and enjoy the challenge of working as a team member on a wide variety of educational efforts. Excellent verbal and written communications skills required in English, and valued in Spanish. Candidates must possess teaching skills, interpersonal skills, the ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues and clientele, and the ability to work as an active member of a team. The candidate must be very organized and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
