The Graduate School is seeking Doctoral level student or Instructor to serve as the Academic Writing Advisor for the Office of Graduate Equity Programs (OGEEP) Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP). The Academic Writing Advisor works closely with the SROP Co-directors and OGEEP Administrative Specialist to provide supplemental writing instruction and advising services to students participating in an eight-week summer residential summer research program. The Academic Writing Advisor also periodically meets with the Senior Director to provide updates and review activities/workshops as it pertains to student writing assignments and progress throughout the program. The Writing Advisor is responsible for creating weekly writing workshops for the SROP undergraduate researchers representing various disciplines, assessing writers` needs through discussion, weekly office hours, and revision; reviewing rough drafts of students’ research papers and composing feedback reports throughout the revision process; developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with students’ Faculty Research Advisors; compiling student contact documentation reports; and assisting the Senior Director and Administrative Specialist, and SROP Co-directors with tasks as needed. Qualified applicants will have prior experience working with undergraduates in an advising capacity; have teaching experience in writing and understanding of basic technical writing skills across disciplines; have a record of conducting research within their field; and have a proven history of working collaboratively with diverse students, faculty, and staff. Qualified applicants should also possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, have a philosophical commitment to the goals and ideals of the OGEEP, and have interest in/the ability to organize professional development events including a research symposium. This summer’s SROP will run from June 4 – July 31, 2018. Given that the SROP begins in the early part of June, the selected applicant should note that planning for the program occurs in mid-May and Academic Writing appointments are from May 16 - August 19, 2018.
