The laboratory of Matt Thomas in the Entomology department at The Pennsylvania State University seeks to fill a full-time appointment for an Insectary Assistant (equivalent to Research Technologist Level 1). Primary duties include rearing mosquito colonies following strict rearing and safety protocols, planning and providing mosquitoes for experimental use, maintaining clean equipment and lab areas associated with maintaining mosquito colonies and restricted access areas of the facilities (such as mosquito colony rooms), and assisting researchers with experiments. Additional duties include coordinating ordering, maintaining appropriate inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies, lab ware, and instruments essential to the operation of the lab. Research support tasks in this role will often involve dissecting Plasmodium falciparum malaria infected mosquitoes and helping with other projects. The successful candidate will contribute to weekly lab meetings. Must be comfortable working with mosquitoes, blood and blood products, and human malaria parasites. Must be available to work some weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule with other lab members. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A BA, BS, or MS in Biology, Entomology, Microbiology, or related field is preferred but not essential.
