Penn State Extension seeks to hire a part-time Mosquito-borne Disease Program Assistant. This individual will function as a team member of the Penn State Extension - Franklin County Extension Team. The Mosquito-borne Disease Program Assistant works under the supervision of the Penn State Extension Franklin County Mosquito-borne Disease Program Coordinator. This individual must be able to drive a truck, work outdoors in all weather conditions and able to navigate uneven terrain. Major responsibilities will include implementing mosquito surveillance, control and Integrated Mosquito Management throughout Franklin County. Key duties include fieldwork, data collection, data entry, and adult mosquito and larval control activities in coordination with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection staff. Ensure compliance with the County Affirmative Action Plan. Through public notification and “All Reasonable Efforts” make educational programs accessible to all clientele without regard to age, ancestry, color, disability or handicap, national origin, race, religious creed, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran status. Qualifications: Working toward a Bachelor or Associate’s degree or higher or an equivalent combination of education, experience, in entomology, environmental resource management, biology or closely related field. Candidate will also have to obtain the PA Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator’s License Category 16. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Physical ability to walk and work in heavily wooded areas and in wet areas. Currently possess or be able to acquire a PA Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator’s License Category 16. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to identify larval, pupal, and adult mosquitoes. Ability to understand the mosquito life cycle and identify mosquito habitat. Ability to lift 40 pounds with or without accommodation. Ability to transport and set up equipment on uneven terrain in isolated areas in inclement weather conditions. Ability to read and understand pesticide label for application rates and safe handling. Excellent attendance and punctuality in meeting assigned program tasks. Strong technology skills and ability to repair small motors. Ability to operate a motor vehicle and read road maps to travel to project collections sites. A valid driver`s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
