Director of Strategic Communications
Penn State Altoona invites applications for the position of Director of Strategic Communications. The Director will report to the Chancellor and provide leadership and oversight for the strategically-directed marketing, communications, and public relations initiatives of the College. Primary duties include: Develop and oversee the overall marketing, public relations, and communications strategies to advance the College's mission and enhance its image and visibility to internal and external audiences; manage staff and budget for the Office of Strategic Communications; lead campus crisis communications team with responsibility for crisis communications preparation and response in coordination with Emergency Response Plan; oversee creative efforts of major publications, advertising, recruitment materials, and event-related communications; ensure consistency of University standards for style, content, and design; oversee non-crisis media relations and public information efforts; serve as chief campus spokesperson as appropriate; oversee social media content and website content management and organizational structure; oversee College special events, including commencement, anniversary events, and community events; provide support and counsel to the Chancellor, administrators, and faculty on complex and/or sensitive communications issues. Serve as speechwriter for the Chancellor as appropriate; Participate in University-wide initiatives in strategic marketing as a team leader or member, in particular act as liaison and collaborate with the University's Office of Strategic Communications on the development and implementation of strategy. This job will be filled as a level 3, or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. An M.B.A. or related Master’s degree is preferred, but not required. Qualified candidates must possess superior understanding of technology, strong verbal and written communication skills, effective relationship-building and diplomacy interpersonal skills, an understanding of and appreciation for the academy and educational enterprise, and the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a dynamic environment. Preferred candidates will have demonstrated marketing communications success in a corporate, education, or agency setting and experience leading a seasoned team in a complex environment. Candidates must be able to provide a portfolio that includes evidence of authored articles, multifaceted and innovative marketing campaigns, etc.
