The Pennsylvania State University seeks candidates for the position of Dean, College of Health and Human Development. Penn State is the land-grant University of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, with the University Park campus as its administrative hub. Penn State has 23 other campuses located throughout the Commonwealth and a highly regarded online World Campus (https://www.worldcampus.psu.edu/). The Dean serves as the principal academic and administrative officer of the College, and reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost of the University. The Dean holds the Raymond E. and Erin Stuart Schultz Dean’s Chair, an endowment that provides the Dean with discretionary funds for College programs. Penn State seeks a distinguished scholar who will continue to develop and build the College as a national and international leader in education, interdisciplinary research, and outreach focused on improving human health, development, and quality of life across the life course. Prior leadership experience with responsibility for strategic planning, personnel management, curriculum and program development, and fostering research and scholarship is desirable, along with an ability to inspire students to expand their knowledge and positively influence a multicultural, global society. The successful candidate must be able to lead a faculty community that encompasses different disciplines and perspectives drawn from the social and behavioral, biological, environmental, organization management, and consumer behavior sciences, as well as the humanities. Leadership in implementing the University’s “Enhancing Health” (http://strategicplan.psu.edu/thematic-priorities/enhancing-health/) strategic priority is expected. The candidate should be committed to high-quality disciplinary and interdisciplinary education and research; demonstrate a record of accomplishment in support of diversity and inclusion, research, teaching, and fundraising; and be familiar with national issues affecting research and higher education. Credentials should be appropriate for a tenured appointment at the rank of Professor in one of the College’s academic units. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The College of Health and Human Development has approximately 4,200 undergraduate and 320 graduate students enrolled in residence, and 685 undergraduate and graduate student majors enrolled through the Penn State’s online World Campus. The College has 280 full-time faculty members, about half of whom are on the tenure track, including many who are recognized leaders in their fields. The College is comprised of eight departments and schools (http://hhd.psu.edu/units/index.html), including Biobehavioral Health; Communication Sciences and Disorders; Health Policy and Administration; Human Development and Family Studies; Kinesiology; Nutritional Sciences; Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management; and the School of Hospitality Management. The College also houses five highly successful, interdisciplinary research centers (http://hhd.psu.edu/college/research-centers) that contribute to the College’s research success; the centers spearhead innovative pre- and post-doctoral training programs, and create intellectual connections and synergies within the College, across the University, and beyond. Successful undergraduate initiatives that promote student engagement include the Women’s Leadership Initiative, Kinesiology’s Exercise is Medicine annual health campaigns, and academic minors that span departments and the University, such as Diversity and Inclusion in Health and Human Development, Global Health, Gerontology, and the Food Systems and Entrepreneurship minors, respectively. The 2017-18 operating budget for the College is approximately $40.5 million, with the World Campus generating about $5 million in additional gross revenue. In 2016-17, the College had more than $57 million in external research awards. The College has over 60,000 loyal alumni, and a substantial track record of private philanthropy and industry support. Its Advancement Team coordinates fundraising, alumni relations, and marketing and communications to connect the College to alumni, donors, industry, and other outside constituencies. The College benefits from more than 260 student, faculty, and program endowments with a market value that exceeds $66 million and generates nearly $4.5 million in spendable income for their designated purposes each year.
