WPSU, Penn State’s PBS and NPR public media station serving Central PA, is seeking a highly motivated graduate assistant. Our new Community and Educational Services team is focused on early childhood education in the areas of literacy, health, and emotional well-being. The graduate assistant will work with the team to assess outreach opportunities around kindergarten readiness; evaluate existing PBS resources designed for pre-k children and their parents, caregivers, and teachers; develop lesson plans; develop parental engagement strategies; develop effective distribution plans for learning material to teachers, parents, and children; disseminate WPSU learning objects through online channels such as PBS Learning Media, and other related initiatives. Knowledge of and special interest in early childhood educational programming, informal learning spaces, K-6 literacy, STEM, and using media to serve early learning audiences is preferred. Past experience working with teachers and the Pennsylvania school system or experience developing literacy programs for at-risk children is a plus. Full-time enrollment in a Master’s or Doctoral graduate program, preferably in: Literacy Education; Applied Youth, Family, and Community Education; Human Development and Family Studies; Curriculum and Instruction; Teaching and Curriculum; or Learning, Design, and Technology. The successful candidate must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, research skills, and the ability to work independently to complete assigned tasks within identified timeframes. The successful candidate must also be available to occasionally conduct educational workshops or help facilitate community engagement activities in the evening and weekends. This is a 20 hour per week (half-time) assistantship and includes tuition and stipend.
