The candidate will perform research on the neurophysiological responses of the mushroom phorid fly, Megaselia halterata, a severe pest of cultivated mushrooms in Pennsylvania and elsewhere in the United States. M. halterata is also a severe nuisance pest to homeowners in residential arrears near mushroom farms. The candidate will perform single sensillum neurophysiological experiments to determine the distribution sensory neurons responding to various key odorants affecting the behavior of these flies, focusing on potential sex pheromone components. The postdoctoral candidate will perform experiments to help in identifying other attractants of M. halterata, especially potential attractants for adult females through the single sensillum recording technique and other methods such as electroantennograms. Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in an appropriate field.
