Description

The Research Technologist 3 will provide leadership in the design, implementation and evaluation of various research and outreach projects in agronomic crop production related to soil fertility and nutrient management. Key responsibilities will include managing experiments to test novel agronomic equipment and practices, collecting and analyzing data related to crops and soils, performing laboratory analysis of plant and soil samples, experimental plot design, soil sampling, running cropping system computer simulation models, managing GIS data for precision ag equipment, and other data collection and analysis as needed. Many experiments will be conducted on private lands owned or managed by cooperating farmers across Pennsylvania and neighboring states, where travel to these sites will involve extended-hour days and occasional overnights. The Technologist will also manage a research laboratory, including the development of safety plans and standard operating procedures for a range of soil and plant analytical methods. Working cooperatively with graduate students and other staff and faculty and supervision of undergraduate workers is expected. The Technologist will work on several research grants that are managed by different principle investigators so exceptional communication and prioritization skills are required. The Technologist will be expected to lead and/or contribute to writing scientific and extension publications related to the scope of work. An independent working style and self-motivation are necessary traits for the targeted individual. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher (Master's degree preferred) or higher plus seven years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. BS in Agroecology, Agronomy, Soil Science, or related fields is highly desired and a MS is preferred. The individual should be familiar with a range of agricultural equipment used in research in order to coordinate with research farm staff and collaborating farmers to establish and manage field experiments. Experience with sample collection, sample analysis, data management, and record keeping in agronomic field experiments is required. Knowledge of statistics and computer software for the analysis of data from agronomic experiments is preferred. Experience using GIS software to analyze spatial data is preferred. Experience developing and maintaining laboratory safety plans and standard operating procedures is preferred. Experience supervising undergraduate workers is preferred. A record of leading scientific or extension publications and conducting extension outreach activities based on results from research and demonstration projects is preferred. Experience conducting innovative sustainable agriculture research related to plant nutrition, soil fertility, or nutrient management is preferred. This position will be supervised by Dr. Charlie White in the Dept. of Plant Sciences.
