The Peer Academic Leader (PAL) Program at Penn State Fayette is an embedded tutoring program coordinated through The Learning Center. Student and faculty needs vary by course, so this model is designed to connect a specific tutor with a course to offer the students (and faculty) enhanced support in classroom activities and through planned review sessions. The PALs will also offer traditional tutoring through The Learning Center. Faculty and the Learning Center (LC) Coordinator will work together to determine the best process for incorporating the PAL into the course to ensure that faculty and student needs are met while adhering to the position guidelines. Most importantly, the PAL will perform a role that helps the students learn more effectively. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Attend all training meetings on time and actively participate. Maintain a professional attitude about matters such as class standards, assignment design, grades, and student complaints. Establish with students a rapport as a peer who is familiar with course materials and objectives and who enjoys the subject. Meet with and communicate regularly with your class professor, including participating in observation and evaluation feedback meetings. If possible, share materials and plans with the instructor before use. Submit sign in sheets and payroll each pay period by established deadlines. Administer mid-semester and end-of-semester student evaluations of the PAL program. Adhere to all policies and procedures of the PAL Program. Evaluate your coordinator and the PAL Program for end-of-semester feedback and future program improvements. Minimum Qualifications: Completed the course for which you are applying to assist. Received at least an A- in the course. Minimum PSU GPA of 3.3. Currently enrolled at Penn State Fayette. Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Received recommendation and permission from faculty member to serve as the PAL for the course. No previous tutoring experience necessary. Training and mentoring will be provided. Applicants must provide a brief cover letter summarizing qualifications, describing their confidence in the course with which they would like to assist, and discussing their capability of communicating with and assisting peers individually and in a group setting.
