Two Assistant positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Tracy Langkilde (http://www.personal.psu.edu/tll30/) at The Pennsylvania State University. The Assistant will work directly under Dr. Christopher Howey (chowey.net) and will assist with an ongoing project investigating the effects of prescribed fire on timber rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus). The main responsibilities of the position will be to assist in the capture and processing of timber rattlesnakes, the radio telemetry of timber rattlesnakes, the collection of habitat use and habitat availability data, processing of operative temperature data, and measurement of preferred body temperature data. The Assistant will work alongside team members collecting data in the field. It is encouraged that applicants have previous experience with identifying reptiles. Knowledge of radio telemetry is preferred, but some on-site learning is expected. Knowledge of native plant species is preferred, but not required. Applicants should be in great physical condition and be able to hike up to 8-10 miles a day in various weather conditions with about 10 pounds of gear, and should be tolerant and knowledgeable about ticks and other biting insects. Qualified applicants will be able to navigate using only a compass and topographic map but also know how to operate a GPS device. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as part of your job duties. A valid driver`s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. This appointment is funded for 16 weeks (~4 months) from date of hire. Target start date is April 16, 2018.
