This position will be housed in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management and requires operational knowledge of LiDAR and GPS tools and techniques for system and sensor integration, data acquisition, processing, and algorithm development. The primary duties in this position will include computer and electronics integration (including fabrication, soldering, and testing); planning, conducting and supervising field work in forested environments; piloting sUAS (small unmanned aerial systems) for data acquisition; integrating embedded sensors and computer logging systems; quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of collected data using software such as R or Python (2.x or 3.x), LAStoools, RTKLib, ESRI ArcMap, Microsoft Access and Excel; and development of workflows and algorithms to extract estimators of forest metrics from the data. The incumbent will be responsible for computer/electronics assembly and integration, developing computer software scripts to automate existing and new workflow processes, streamlining data collection methodologies, managing large datasets, and integrating state-of-the-art hardware and software into existing systems. In addition, the successful applicant will collaborate with ESM faculty and graduate students in analyzing data, preparing manuscripts for publication, and writing proposals to secure additional funding. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The selected candidate is required to already possess or have the ability to obtain and provide evidence of having a valid Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 107 Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) pilot’s license. Must be able to carry 50-lb loads 100 yards, with or without accommodation. The successful applicant must demonstrate a strong work ethic, thrive in a team environment, and have initiative to work independently. This position requires a valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with good possibility of re-funding.
