A Research Technologist (Level 3-4) position is open immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Matthew Swulius, in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Penn State College of Medicine. The Swulius Lab uses cutting-edge cryo electron microscopy techniques to study structural mechanisms of neuronal cell biology. Primary duties will include maintenance and genetic manipulation of mammalian cells in culture, fluorescence imaging (both cryo and room temperature), protein expression/purification, cryopreservation of cells and purified proteins for imaging, and data analysis. Other duties will include training and overseeing graduate students in lab methodology and safety protocols, managing lab orders, developing new protocols for ongoing research projects, purchasing/maintenance of new lab equipment, as well as maintaining a well-organized lab space for research to happen easily. A strong background in cell culture, genetic manipulation of cultured mammalian cells and fluorescence microscopy are a must, and any experience in electron microscopy is advantageous. This job will be filled as a level 3, or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher (Master's degree preferred) or higher plus seven years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire.
