Penn State’s Outdoor Education Field Lab and Nature Center—Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center (SCEC)—is looking for an organized, energetic, dedicated, and responsible individual to be the friendly face of Shaver’s Creek at the welcome desk/bookstore in our newly renovated Visitor Center. This position is an integral part of the day-to-day operations of our Center—on the phone, through email, and in person you will be expected to provide excellent customer service to our diverse population of customers, including Penn State students, nature center visitors, program participants, camp parents, work-study students, volunteers, staff, and interns. Shaver’s Creek is open seven days a week, and the typical work week for this position will be Thursday through Monday to support our vibrant weekend visitation. This Visitor Services Steward (VSS) position works under the guidance of the Educational Operations Manager and Assistant Bookstore Manager, assisting with all aspects of the visitor experience, including maintaining bookstore inventories, processing sales and reconciliations, answering phones, greeting visitors, training interns and staff on bookstore processes, coordinating local art consignment, and providing additional administrative assistance where needed. The VSS also will assist with program registration, membership management, internal communications, and program marketing through website updates and email lists. Typically requires a High School diploma or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Successful candidates should have past retail experience, excellent interpersonal skills, knowledge of database maintenance, and must feel comfortable answering phones and enjoy interacting with the public. Candidates must be proficient with e-mail, word processing, and be able to make basic website updates. Experience with design software like Adobe InDesign is a plus. Candidates should also possess a strong environmental ethic consistent with the mission of Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center; a zero-waste facility situated 12 miles from University Park campus within Penn State’s 7,000 acre Stone Valley Forest. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
