Penn State ARL delivers world-class Data and Geospatial Sciences which provide a decisive advantage to our sponsors and research partners. Anyone who produces or aggregates data needs a suite of algorithms and analytics in order to generate accurate interpretations, increase understanding, and drive important decisions. ARL conducts indispensable research and development in the Data and Geospatial Sciences which helps to shape decisions that impact our world. The Cyber, Data and Image Sciences (CDIS) Division at ARL is conducting Anticipatory Analytics research. This work advances the discovery and modeling of associations, trends, patterns and system dynamics that support the conditional exploration of potential future events. CDIS creates computational methods to transform traditional GEOINT and open source data into spatio-temporal information describing events and activities. We develop quantitative and predictive analytic models to capture hidden relationships among events and activities and to measure change and characterize uncertainty. We enrich the field of GEOINT by combining full spectrum source data with modeling capabilities that attribute real world object behavior to known signatures and doctrines. Help us further develop the ability to capture knowledge using dynamically-refined models influenced by recent spatial, temporal and domain observations so that we can better represent the most current understanding of world events, systems, and discrete entities. Join the ARL Cyber, Data, and Image Sciences Division! We are looking for Undergraduate and Graduate Students to aid our research efforts in this unique problem set that has applications in defense, law enforcement, security, disaster relief, disaster preparedness, and first response. CDIS Researchers apply the scientific method across multiple disciplines to advance Data and Geospatial Sciences and to enhance data analytics through systematic experimentation and exploitation. They complete scientific research projects and facilitate collaboration among diverse domains to further scientific inquiry and application. Depending on level of experience, CDIS Researchers plan and conduct research, provide technical guidance and oversight, report results, and advise on new and evolving technology. Researchers will receive technical and professional mentorship and learn about conducting efficient research operations on diverse multi-disciplinary teams. Furthermore, participants have the opportunity to learn how research efforts transition from the proof-of-concept stage to integrated systems. Student applicants must be completing a M.S. or Ph.D. with backgrounds in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Geospatial Information Science, Geography, Physics, Geometry, Computer Vision, Data Science, Remote Sensing, or a related field. Applicants must demonstrate knowledge of algorithm development and programming to test and validate the proposed activity-based analytics. Python, R, or MATLAB experience is highly regarded. Experience with Caffe, TensorFlow, OpenCV, Scikit Learn, or similar tools is highly regarded. Familiarity with machine learning and neural networks is highly regarded. Applicants should have excellent verbal and written communication skills, be self-motivated, and work well individually and on teams. U.S. citizenship is required for the applicant. Graduate student applicants will be considered based on a resume, cover letter stating research/educational interests, and a letter of recommendation from faculty in a related subject-matter area (Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Electrical Engineering, IST, Data Science, etc).
