The Facilities and Instrumentation Department, part of the Research Facilities Division in the Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Office (FDAO) at The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL), is looking for a junior Engineering Support Specialist to provide electrical and mechanical technical assistance for experimental projects and facility maintenance. Responsibilities include: Assist with the design, fabrication, and support of the FDAO facility testing, as well as field testing; provide both mechanical and electrical technical assistance for projects within the FDAO; and provide backup support for facility operators, balance machine operators, hardware inventory, calibrations, mechanical and electrical installations, surface-mount soldering, and fabrication of research prototype hardware and sensors. Light physical effort is required to assemble and/or operate equipment, along with the ability to enter small spaces, work in confined environments, and work off of ladders. Typically requires an Associate's degree or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Applied Technologies is desired. Experience in the following areas is required: Soldering; cable making; mechanical assembly; electronic systems; and instrumentation. Familiarity with standard electronic and instrumentation troubleshooting is also required. The ability to work well independently and as part of a team, as well as good verbal and written skills, are necessary to be successful in this position. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
