Position Description: The Mechanical and Electrical Design Department of Penn State’s Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) wants to assist students in preparation for their careers by providing training in the Siemens NX CADD software and use in real-life situations. In this internship, you will learn to: Create solid models, detail drawings, assembly drawings, bills of materials, and other documentation using accepted methods and techniques; support basic research engineering programs utilizing computer aided design, documentation, databases, and/or manufacturing software tools; assist in the design and packaging of mechanical and electrical components into assemblies as part of larger systems in collaboration with R&D engineers, engineering aides, and senior personnel; at the appropriate level, assist in material selection, geometric tolerancing and dimensioning, manufacturing and assembly process analysis, and cost effective design; utilize computer aided design software to create design documentation including notes and manufacturing information, and ensure work is in compliance with accepted standards; provide work status updates to senior personnel; perform basic department tasks related to copying, filing, and database entry including classified and unclassified documentation control; and respond to requests for information from the manufacturing and assembly teams, and participate in design review meetings. Mandatory Position Description Requirements: You must be a senior in Computer Aided Drafting-CAD (Mechanical), Engineering CAD Technology, or Engineering Design Technology. Required knowledge areas include: The use of solid modeling and drafting CAD software to create mechanical designs and the related detail and assembly documentation; basic knowledge of mechanical design concepts and the use of commercial hardware and components in packaging for a desired outcome; mechanical CADD software; Siemens NX (UGS, UGSolutions) MCAD software (v8.5 or higher) or similar design tool; Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Access software; and familiarization with product data management concepts or software tools. Training in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing and ASME Y14 documentation standards is desired. Job Requirements: Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen to apply and will be subject to a government security investigation. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
