The research laboratories of Dr. Frank Pugh and Dr. Shaun Mahony, in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at The Pennsylvania State University, are seeking a highly motivated, senior programmer with proven experience in developing open-source bioinformatic software and research applications. The hired individual will be the “go-to” person for development of bioinformatics projects in a team of ~25 scientists, faculty and technicians, working primarily with epigenomics data derived from next-generation sequencing (NGS). More specifically, the position involves designing and identifying the requirements for interactive database applications and programming novel methods for analysis. This position requires a background in statistics, development experience on a UNIX platform, and the ability to develop and support a codebase written with Python, R, JavaScript and Java. Experience with peer design, code reviews, source code management and deployment management is helpful and will be part of the expectations for this position. This job will be filled as a level 3, or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher in a field of study with focus on computational research methods or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Applications should include a cover letter and resume. A project portfolio and set of code samples from previous work will be requested for all applicants selected for an interview. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from the date of hire with possibility of re-funding.
