The goal of the First-Year Engagement (FYE) program is to help first and second semester students successfully integrate into college life; FYE Peer Assistants (PAs) work directly with first-year students, faculty, and the FYE coordinator to support FY students on the Penn State Abington campus. FYE PAs work with students in their assigned FYE class; they may also participate in Common Break FYE events and presentations. Must be a Full-time PSU Abington students with strong GPAs (3.0 or higher); must be Organized, dependable, familiar with the PSU Abington campus and campus resources, a successful graduate of the FYE course they will support (or a similar course), and available to attend a full-day training session before the semester begins (a CNED 304 requirement). Important Note: Peer Assistants are not Teaching Assistants. PAs provide information on and help with the following: College success skills (note-taking, listening, academic planning, etc.); PSU technology (ANGEL, Canvas, WebMail, eLion/LionPATH, etc.); campus resources (The Learning Center, Advising, Health and Wellness, Career Development, PSU Library research, etc.); campus activities (clubs, events, athletics, ACURA, etc.) PAs are required to do the following: Enroll and participate in CNED 304 (3 credits), the Peer Assistant training course. Attend their assigned FYE class as often as the FYE faculty member requires (usually weekly, sometimes all classes). Present weekly FYE topics to FY students during class as scheduled by the FYE faculty member. Meet with the FYE faculty member on a weekly basis to plan upcoming class presentations and discuss course content and student support, questions, or concerns. Assist in facilitating class discussions or in-class activities if requested to do so by the FYE faculty member. Contact students on a weekly basis to share the FYE Newsletter and weekly FYE content. Promptly respond (within 24 hours) to e-mails, texts, ANGEL messages, or phone calls from first year students (The Faculty member and PA will select the communication medium used in the class). Respect the confidentiality of FY students. Prepare for and lead study groups or training sessions to review for course exams or to practice skills necessary for success in the class (not required for all FYE classes). Participate in Common Break panel discussions on topics such as adjusting to college life, college success strategies, or choosing a major (PAs can participate as a presenter or provide support by taking attendance or assisting with food and handout distribution). Act as student advocates and liaisons between FYE faculty and students. Be role models of success by exemplifying successful college behaviors, attitudes, and skills.
