Applications are currently being accepted for the Director of the Multicultural Engineering Programs (MEP). The Director will be responsible for managing, directing and implementing services associated with the Center for Engineering Outreach and Inclusion. Specific responsibilities include providing resource information to equity groups including graduate and undergraduate students, implementing MEP recruitment and retention programs with the goal of increasing the percentage of graduating underrepresented engineers, and serve as the college liaison to internal and external constituents, students and alumni. The scope and purpose of the position is to attract more underrepresented students into engineering academics and into the engineering workforce, which is a goal in the College of Engineering Strategic Plan and is also aligned with institutional initiatives in the Penn State Framework to Foster Diversity. The Center for Outreach and Inclusion directly serves approximately 2,200 students through 20 annual programs serving multicultural students and women in engineering. This critical position works with students, faculty and administrators to help underrepresented students enter the pipeline towards successful careers in engineering. The Multicultural Engineering Program initiatives are primarily supported by external corporate funding. Thus, fundraising through proposal writing and networking are vital to augmenting programmatic activities and to increasing their impact. These networks include: national professional organizations, Big Ten partner institutions, corporate sponsors, and internal diversity teams. The program director often needs to travel in order to maintain these relationships and to aid in the successful recruitment and retention of African American, Hispanic, Native American, and other underrepresented populations at Penn State. The Director leads all aspects of MEP undergraduate retention and pre-college recruitment program initiatives. The successful candidate will exhibit a strong orientation towards the values of a diverse student body; skill in engaging faculty, staff, and students in outreach; an inclusive climate and diversity issues; a strong desire to consult national organizations and scholarly literature on climate inclusion and diversity; skill at managing people and events; an engaging personal history of understanding issues of inclusion and diversity; and ability to collect and analyze data for decision-making and organizing programs. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher or higher plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
