Starting Date: August 15, 2018 or as negotiated. Responsibilities: This is a nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in rural sociology with a 75% research and 25% teaching responsibility and with the expectation of an affiliation with the Population Research Institute. The successful applicant will be expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program related to the sociology and demography of rural population health and health disparities. The candidate’s research agenda should focus on the prevalence, correlates, causes, and/or consequences of health disparities, with special attention on rural/urban and other spatial variation in this regard. Specific topics for study might include demographic and/or spatial variation in health outcomes (e.g., chronic diseases, morbidity, mortality); health behaviors (e.g., nutrition, physical activity, smoking, substance misuse); health care access and utilization; community health; health and environment; and health-related policies. Preference will be given to candidates with the skills and proclivity to conduct quantitative multi-level and spatial analyses, taking advantage of Penn State’s Federal Statistical Research Data Center for this purpose. The successful candidate will be expected to work in multi-disciplinary teams and secure external funding. Teaching expectations will be two courses per year pre-tenure, and three courses per year once tenure is achieved. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a graduate course on advanced statistical modeling, as well as courses that contribute to the Rural Sociology graduate program and its dual-degree program in Demography, and to the Department’s undergraduate program in Community, Environment, and Development. The candidate will have the opportunity to advise graduate students in Rural Sociology. Qualifications: Ph.D. in rural sociology, sociology, demography, or related social science or public health field. The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the University and community is required.
