Shaver's Creek Environmental Center
Full/Part Time:

Located in Pennsylvania’s ridge-and-valley province near State College, Tussey Mountain Hawkwatch is one of the premier Spring Golden Eagle migration sites in the eastern U.S. We are seeking a Hawk Counter that can provide accurate raptor identification and reporting, while providing informal interpretation to site visitors. While the position requires a great deal of independence, it will be supported by staff from Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center. A two-day training will be provided prior to count to familiarize the counter with the history and population trends of the Hawk Watch, as well as interpretive training and an orientation to serving as an ambassador for Shaver’s Creek and Penn State University. Early season weather is often harsh and very cold, with few people visiting the site in these conditions. A dedicated, self-motivated individual who can both work well with people and endure challenging conditions is a must. Site access requires 4-5 mile drive (on state-maintained roads) to the ridgetop, followed by a .6 mile trail to the count site. Duties include conducting the daily count, interacting with visitors, completion of field data forms, and posting daily results to the HawkCount website and State College Bird Club listserv. Attendance at the State College Bird Club meeting is required (once per month). Preparing and conducting an end of season presentation is required. Applicant must possess strong raptor and general bird identification skills, including aging, and prior hawkwatch experience is preferred. While not required, previous environmental interpretation skills are ideal, but a passion for connecting raptor and habitat conservation to the community is essential. Must have a personal pair of binoculars and spotting scope is preferred. Must have transportation to and from the hawkwatch location. Overtime hours will be required. Must be computer literate and capable of entering and managing data (computer access can be provided.) This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
