The College of Education at Penn State is strengthening its commitment to the learning sciences and the study of learning. The College seeks to hire a cluster of at least four, tenure-line faculty during 2017-2018 to build upon its existing scholarly and programmatic strengths. In particular, the College will hire new faculty to strengthen the study of learning and to build bridges among four existing areas of graduate education and faculty scholarship: educational psychology; learning, design, and technology; mathematics education; and science education. The long-range goal is to strengthen Penn State’s leadership in learning sciences research and development, enhancing existing foci: on learning in the disciplines (beginning with learning in areas of mathematics and science); on the design of learning environments; on design-based research, intervention research; and on other studies of learners and learning. The Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education has multiple open-rank tenure-track positions available in Educational Psychology. These 36-week faculty appointments are set to begin Fall semester 2018 and will have the possibility of supplementary summer appointments in research and/or teaching. The successful candidates will have an active program of research and will have responsibilities for teaching residential as well as online undergraduate and graduate courses, advising master’s and doctoral graduate students, and providing service to the Department, College, and University as well as to professional organizations or other external agencies. Candidates must have an earned doctorate in Educational Psychology, Learning Sciences or a closely related field. Candidates who have completed all doctoral work but have not yet defended their dissertation at the time of the application will also be considered. Candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to a significant program of research that has the potential to secure external funding, commensurate with experience. Candidates must provide evidence of excellence in teaching and advising, commensurate with experience. A willingness to teach in online environments is also a requirement. The Educational Psychology program at Penn State is dedicated to the study of factors that affect and underlie learning with the goal that this work can be used to support educational initiatives. The successful candidates will have expertise that contributes to this work and aligns with the two strands of Educational Psychology: a) Learning and Teaching Processes and b) Measurement and Research Methodology. We encourage applicants with an established record of publication or the promise of such record of publication in the study of: learning processes, learning activities studied in various contexts, and/or innovative methodology to further the study of learning processes, learning contexts, and learners’ development throughout the life span. The strongest candidates will be able to teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in learning theories, assessment of student learning, and/or qualitative and quantitative research methods.
