The College of Information Sciences and Technology invites applications for a Researcher position. This position will be responsible for the development, testing, and theoretical assessment of novel techniques in natural-language processing, which is a field that researches how computers can understand texts written in English or other languages in order to make sense of it. Specifically, this position will make possible improved computer programs that can cost-effectively analyze newspaper articles. This will be used to help build a database containing information about wars and conflicts throughout the world. This information is extracted from newspaper articles and stored in databases so that political scientists can analyze it and combine it with other datasets to understand what the right conditions are for more peaceful interactions between nation-states. The Applied Cognitive Lab at Penn State leverages the scientific study of human cognition in order to improve real-world applications. This position will also collaborate with colleagues, prepare publications and conference presentation, and prepare proposals for future work. Experience in how the mind represents meaning and knowledge in memory and strong programming skills are necessary for this project.
