The College of Education at Penn State is strengthening its commitment to the learning sciences and the study of learning. The College seeks to hire a cluster of at least four, tenure-line faculty during 2017-2018 to build upon its existing scholarly and programmatic strengths. In particular, the College will hire new faculty to strengthen the study of learning and to build bridges among four existing areas of graduate education and faculty scholarship: educational psychology; learning, design, and technology; mathematics education; and science education. The long-range goal is to strengthen Penn State’s leadership in learning sciences research and development, enhancing existing foci: on learning in the disciplines (beginning with learning in areas of mathematics and science); on the design of learning environments; on design-based research, intervention research; and on other studies of learners and learning. The Department of Learning and Performance Systems in the College of Education seeks applications from individuals with scholarly interests and expertise in the learning sciences who work at the intersection of learning, design, and technology (LDT). This includes research and development on design of learning environments or technologies in formal and informal settings. The position is a tenure-track 36 week appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank with the possibility of supplementary summer appointments in research and/or teaching. Faculty members typically teach graduate courses both residentially and online, with some opportunities for undergraduate teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to recruit, train, and supervise graduate students in Learning, Design, and Technology; to pursue external funding for supporting learning sciences research; to develop and teach graduate courses relevant to the LDT program; and to engage in leadership and service to professional organizations and societies, educational institutions, agencies, and the University. Successful applicants will also engage in innovative research efforts, including, but not limited to: technologically-enhanced learning; the design of learning environments for informal, preK-12, or college settings; applications of learning analytics; emerging technologies; computer-supported collaborative learning; and learning communities and affinity spaces. Candidates should have a program of research that has the potential to secure external funding and will lead to publications as well as a commitment to excellence in teaching and advising. The position also offers the possibility for collaborations with the local community organizations, higher education, and preK-12 school contexts. Successful candidates will be invited to join other faculty across departments as part of the College of Education’s learning sciences initiative. Required qualifications (commensurate with experience): earned doctorate in the Learning Sciences; Learning, Design, or Technology; or a closely related field; candidates finishing their doctorates by August 2018 will be considered as well; evidence of a commitment to developing a program of research related to learning, design, and technology; evidence of a commitment to excellence in teaching and advising, including a willingness to teach in online environments and integrate innovative technology into university courses; and evidence of a commitment to working collegially and with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Desirable qualifications: LDT faculty have a broad definition of learning that includes social, cognitive, sociocultural, and identity frameworks.
