Description

Environmental Health Safety (EHS) is seeking a qualified individual to assist in the day to day activities associated with the University’s Lab and Research Safety Program. EHS is a division of the Office of the Physical plant and oversees safety for all Penn State locations, departments, and work units. This position will report to the Hazardous Materials Program Manager. Responsibilities include: managing the laboratory safety training program, the hazardous materials shipping program, and the chemical inventory program; compliance auditing and reporting of University programs; use and maintenance of various testing and sampling equipment; response to emergencies; and presentation of training programs. Position will supervise the University’s Hazardous Materials Shipping Specialist. Position may periodically be “On-Call” for evenings and weekends. The position requires a working knowledge of federal, state, and local standards and regulations; and an understanding of good practices in a wide range of EHS programs. Demonstrated experience communicating technical information to a wide range of audiences is necessary. Experience with Microsoft Office programs is preferred. Candidate must: achieve medical clearance and be able to wear respiratory protection; achieve Hazwoper (29CFR1910.120) certification within 180 days of hire. This job will be filled as a level 3, or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in Occupational Safety/Environmental Health or related discipline or higher plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
