The English program at Penn State Harrisburg seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Technical and Professional Writing, starting August 2018. Required Qualifications: Ph.D. or a terminal degree in composition/rhetoric, specialization in technical or professional writing, or a similar field, by the time of appointment; evidence of teaching excellence in composition and/or technical writing and/or professional writing; evidence of scholarly potential, especially in publishing articles in the field of technical and professional writing. Preferred Qualifications: Academic experience with international students and honors students; professional experience as a technical writer or a professional writer in a business or similar field; specialization in document design and editing in traditional and new media formats; secondary knowledge or background in all sciences, engineering, and technology. We are looking for a candidate who can interact with students majoring in engineering, computer science, information systems, math, and pre-med who are required to pass a 200-level technical writing course. This candidate will also teach and advise English majors who minor in technical writing. There should be opportunities to teach on our graduate faculty in the rhetorical theory or advanced technical writing courses. The candidate might also teach honors sections of composition or technical writing. The candidate should be familiar with technical writing as a profession as well as an academic discipline. The teaching load will be 2-3, 2-3 for the first two years, followed by a 3-3 load. As a research faculty member, this candidate will be expected to publish on a regular basis and engage in professional development and outreach in the field. The English program at Penn State Harrisburg offers tracks in general English and Secondary Education English. We are part of an interdisciplinary School of Humanities, and there are opportunities to collaborate with Communications, American Studies, and Humanities. We are planning to offer a technical writing minor starting in 2018; we currently offer minors in general writing and creative writing. Our undergraduate class sizes are typically less than 30 students; graduate courses usually less than 15. We are located in Middletown, PA, and we are just a few miles from the state capitol of Harrisburg, which has thriving and rejuvenated cultural opportunities. Our campus is convenient to Amtrak and the Harrisburg International Airport.
