Penn State’s Office of Social Media within Strategic Communications is seeking a social media specialist to work closely with digital and social media staff to plan and execute strategy for the University’s main social media accounts. The Social Media Specialist is responsible for contributing to both long-term planning and daily content production and curation on multiple digital platforms. This position also monitors social conversations and comments, responding as appropriate; seeks out information of interest to our audiences; analyzes content and campaigns; identifies areas of success or needed improvement; provides reports; works closely with social media administrators throughout the University to strengthen Penn State’s overall digital presence; monitors and measures impact; and stays current on trends and emerging practices and platforms. The ideal candidate will have excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills and an understanding of and familiarity with a wide range of social media platforms, management tools, and best practices. He or she will also have knowledge of public relations principles and best practices and the ability to manage social media accounts. Basic photo and video skills are necessary, and demonstrated success using visual storytelling to drive engagement is desired. Flexibility, a balance of creative and analytical skills, and the ability to work with a team and also self-manage are essential. This job will be filled as a level 1, or level 2, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 1. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs.
