Student Orientation and Transition Programs (SOTP) is seeking a diverse team of aspiring undergraduate student leaders at the University Park campus to serve as Orientation Leaders. As a part of the Orientation Team (OTeam), Orientation Leaders play a key role in providing a quality transitional experience for all incoming first-year students through the New Student Orientation (NSO) program. Orientation Leaders assist incoming Penn State students as well as their parents and family members by providing an introduction to the campus and its resources, leading conversations about the transition from high school to college, and acting as a representative of the Pennsylvania State University. Primary responsibilities include providing general assistance with the college transition by facilitating small group discussion on subjects including: transition issues, involvement on campus, diversity and inclusion, health and safety, personal responsibility, and responsible decision making; presenting information to students on educational planning, including academic requirements, academic goal setting, academic integrity, and exploring academic majors alongside academic advisers. Orientation Leaders must work cooperatively within a team of fellow student leaders to accomplish tasks, respond to questions from students and families about university life using personal experiences in a professional manner, and encourage students to establish meaningful connections with other first-year students. Orientation Leaders will also engage in self-evaluation and reflection throughout the summer to develop a personal growth plan. Members of the OTeam must be able to be flexible and patient, as NSO is a demanding and fast-paced working environment. OTeamers are expected to actively engage with students and families while providing a welcoming environment for all new Penn Staters. Interested applicants must be a current full-time Penn State undergraduate student who, plans to be enrolled at University Park in fall 2018, will have obtained at least 24 credits by the end of the spring 2018 semester, and maintain a 2.5 or higher GPA. Successful candidates will enroll in a two-credit training course during spring 2018 semester, and obtain a B or higher in that course to continue employment. The course meets Tuesdays from 6:00-8:30pm. Additionally, the class will require attendance at a daylong retreat on Saturday, January 27, 2018. Orientation Leaders must be available to work NSO beginning Wednesday, May 9, 2018 through Sunday, August 19, 2018, averaging 36 hours/week, with early morning, evening, and weekend hours required. An NSO hiatus is scheduled from July 21 through August 8, during which there are no work commitments. Availability for the course, training, and NSO dates is non-negotiable. Orientation Leaders are not permitted to hold another job from May 9 - July 21, 2018. They may enroll in an online summer session course with approval.
