Research Technologist (Fermentation Specialist)
The Shared Fermentation Facility of the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences is seeking an enthusiastic full-time Research Technologist. This multi-user core is a biotechnology pilot plant capable of research- and pilot-scale production of microbial cells over a wide range of controlled conditions. The Facility also includes technologies for separation and cell disruption, biomolecule purification, and process monitoring. The Facility has recently benefited from a substantial gift to the University which will allow a total re-build and modernization of the Facility to modern, industrial standards. The gift has also established the Center of Excellence in Industrial Biotechnology at Penn State, and the Shared Fermentation Facility will be central in providing training and research opportunities available from the Center. The incumbent, in conjunction with the Facility Director, needs the skill set to provide and oversee all services, and train the facility users. Together, they will be responsible for operating and performing maintenance of all of the equipment within the Facility. Prior experience in daily operation of a research lab is highly favorable, as is a working knowledge of bioprocessing skills (fermentation, separations, biomolecule purification, a demonstrated competence with sterile techniques and supporting analytical techniques). Good interpersonal and communication skills are required in order to assist the multidisciplinary faculty and trainees in optimizing experimental parameters and interpreting data. Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office software programs is preferred. This job will be filled as a level 2, or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent prospects of re-funding
