The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS; in the College of Health and Human Development at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for an open rank, tenured/tenure track faculty member whose research focuses on reducing social disparities, including but not limited to health, education, racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities. This position is part of a cluster hire by Penn State’s Social Science Research Institute (SSRI; of up to six new faculty members, across the social and behavioral sciences, whose research focuses on reducing social disparities. Of particular interest for this position are candidates who focus on translating research evidence into public policy, including by applying expertise in economic analysis and/or by leveraging administrative data to examine the economic value of evidence-based strategies. Candidates with experience and interest in engaging with policymakers are of particular interest. Applicants’ program of research should include a strong publication record of externally funded, high impact, interdisciplinary and translational scholarship. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses as well as directing theses/dissertations. A doctorate in the social/behavioral sciences (e.g., public administration/policy, economics, public health, data science, psychology, sociology) and outstanding scholarly accomplishments and promise are required. Rated by the U.S. News and World Report as one of the top developmental science programs in the country, HDFS administers and supports graduate, undergraduate, and research programs focused on individual development from infancy to old age, on family structure and dynamics, and on the impact of social/cultural contexts on development and family functioning. Department hallmarks include expertise in development across the lifespan, longitudinal methods, and design and evaluation of preventive interventions to promote health and development. The Department`s multidisciplinary faculty encompasses experts in child maltreatment, social-affective neuroscience, clinical and health psychology, sociology and demography, prevention science, family systems and prevention and developmental methodologies.
