Description

The Materials and Manufacturing Office of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State has an opening in the Embedded Monitoring and Control Systems Department for an entry to mid-level mechanical engineer. Responsibilities include: Support the design and development of mechanical and electrical systems; participate in the fabrication, installation, and testing of electrical and mechanical systems, including the collection of acoustic and vibration data; design packaging and enclosures for electrical components and oversee fabrication with machine shops, third party rapid prototyping vendors, or 3-D printing facilities; and design parts, fixtures, and enclosures for fabrication using additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping processes, such as low volume plastic injection molding. This job will be filled as a level 1, level 2, or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline (Professional Engineer license accepted in lieu of Bachelor's degree) or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 1. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Industrial Engineering is desired. The following are preferred: Proficient understanding of 3-D modeling software, such as Solidworks, Inventor, or Siemens NX; experience packaging and documenting embedded hardware; experience in additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping processes, such as low volume plastic injection molding; and a basic understanding of electronics, connectors, and wire harness development. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen. This is a one-year, fixed-term renewable appointment.
