The Initiative for Sustainable Electric Power Systems within the Penn State EMS Energy Institute is recruiting a Postdoctoral Scholar to do research on power systems modeling and electricity market design. This position would be part of an ongoing project at Penn State to develop models to inform electricity market design, price formation issues, and system planning for robustness and resilience. The position would be jointly supervised by Profs. Seth Blumsack (Energy and Mineral Engineering), Uday Shanbhag (Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering), and Mort Webster (Energy and Mineral Engineering), would provide opportunities to interact with ISO/RTOs, utilities, and other industry partners. We seek a candidate with a PhD in a relevant engineering degree such as Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial Engineering, or Operations Research, and with experience in power systems modeling. This experience could include optimal power flow, unit commitment, capacity expansion, and game-theoretic and complementarity-based models of electricity markets, and experience with stochastic optimization methods would be additionally valued. Some training or familiarity with the economics of electricity markets is also desirable.
