The Peer Tutor works with students who need help in a course or courses in which the tutor has been successful (usually the tutor has earned a grade of “A”). Faculty recommendation is required. The Peer Tutor uses good oral and written communication skills, listening skills, knowledge of the subject, patience, and creativity to identify areas of difficulty and find ways for each student to learn and master the course material. The Peer Tutor holds weekly drop-in hours (if assigned), makes appointments with students, keeps careful records of tutoring sessions and hours, meets with the Learning Center Coordinator as needed, and maintains confidentiality of tutoring contacts and all academic records. Tutoring sessions generally take place in the Learning Center, Monday through Friday during the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., by appointment and/or drop-in, depending on the course and number of students seeking help. Hours by appointment range from 0-6 hours per week; drop-in hours range from 2-10 hours per week, depending on demand. Hours are subject to change at any time during the semester. Peer Tutors must be current Penn State Wilkes-Barre students.
