The Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences is seeking a Research Technologist to be part of the molecular microbiology section at the Animal Diagnostic Lab (ADL). The incumbent will maintain and operate the ION TORRENT Personal Genome machine, extract genomic data for bioinformatics analyses for the Salmonella whole genome sequencing project. The incumbent will also perform antibiotic sensitivity testing and Salmonella serotyping. The candidate will also be responsible for managing and cataloging Salmonella isolates, purchase, prepare and maintain an inventory of media and reagents, and maintain laboratory records. In addition, the candidate is expected to support quality assurance and quality control practices as required by the American Association of Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD), maintain laboratory cleanliness and safety including autoclaving of biohazard waste. This job will be filled as a level 1, or level 2, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 1. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Preference will be given to those applicants with a Bachelor's degree in microbiology. Familiarity with genomics, bioinformatics or molecular biology will be an advantage. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
